Here are some things you can do to prepare your home for winter:
- Clean gutters: Remove leaves, debris, and water from your gutters so that melted snow can drain away.
- Protect pipes: Insulate your pipes, and water heater to prevent freezing and bursting, and to save money on heating. Remove outdoor hoses and turn off water.
- Check carbon monoxide detectors: Test your smoke and carbon monoxide alarms to ensure they are working.
- Reverse ceiling fans: In the winter, rotate your ceiling fans clockwise to push warm air back down.
- Assess insulation: Check that your attic, walls, and crawl spaces are well-insulated to keep out cold air and retain heat.
- Check your fireplace: have your fireplace inspected for cracks, holes, or other damage before using it in severe weather.
- Flush your sprinklers: Turn off the water, drain the pipes, and blow them free of water to prevent frozen pipes.
- Have your heating system inspected: Have a professional inspect your heating system.
- Install a programmable thermostat: Install a programmable thermostat in your home.
- Prepare your lawn equipment: Prepare your lawn equipment for winter.
